Welcome

Office of the Guardian for Children and Young People

Have you met Oog & Nunga Oog?

Listen

Oog and Nunga Oog are our special team members and symbols of safety for and created by children in foster care, kinship care and residential care.

They were created by children, and we honour and respect their contribution to our office.

Every child in care should get an Oog or a Nunga Oog. They are there to remind them that our Office is here to listen and help them.

Each Oog and Nunga Oog has our phone number on the foot. Children and young people can call us if they need help and want to talk to someone.

If children don’t have an Oog or a Nunga Oog yet, they can ask their social worker to get one for them.

Oog’s story

When our office first opened, we wanted a fun way for kids to be able to recognise us.

A group of children and young people who had lived in care came together and designed Oog.

Oog is a yellow dinosaur shaped like the O. Its name is an abbreviation for Office of Guardian.

Nunga Oog’s story

A few years after Oog joined our team, we asked children to help us create a character especially for Aboriginal children and young people, to honour their identity and culture.

We organised many events where kids, elders, and artists all came together to bring Nunga Oog to life.

They shared symbols and pictures that were important to them.

Some children said Nunga Oog needed big ears to hear, and a spear to protect them like a warrior.

One child said he wants Nunga Oog to protect his siblings, so Nunga Oog should have a shield.

Nunga Oog joined our team in 2023 after all these ideas were put together in one drawing.

Oog & Nunga Oog would love to meet you

When Oog and Nunga Oog are out at events, they’re always the centre of attention. You might even see them at the Adelaide Christmas Pageant.

Say hi next time you see them out, they would love to hear from you.

I have the right to be safe and well cared for.

As a child and young person in care, you have special rights. These are rules that should be followed so you can grow up happy, healthy and achieving your dreams.

If you feel that your rights are not being met, and you are not being listened to, we can help.
