Shona

Shona is an Eastern Arrernte woman and comes from a family who has a long legacy of working with First Nation children, families and communities. Having previously worked in the child protection system, she has worked hard to build First Nation governance, leadership and reconciliation and playing her part in building a more culturally inclusive community. When she is not working, Shona is busy keeping her family of nine close, strong and connected. Shona’s favourite cartoon is Scooby Doo!

Sue has over 30 years working across the child protection and out-of-home care sector and is also a member of the SA Parole Board. Sue brings invaluable skills and knowledge not only from her time at DCP, but also from the roles she held at the SALHN Child Protection Service where she delivered clinical assessment and therapeutic services for children who had been exposed to trauma. Sue’s favourite food is Tapas!

Shaylem is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman who understands the importance of culture and connection. Shaylem has previously worked in foster care and education supporting First Nations children and adults to thrive and reach their full potential. Shaylem is passionate about supporting Aboriginal children to have their voice heard and be the leaders of their own lives. Outside of work, Shaylem loves cooking, spending time with her partner and cats and watching Netflix. Shaylem’s favourite music artist is Justice Bieber.

Lauren has worked at Aboriginal legal services in Victoria and the NT. Lauren had the privilege of assisting young people engage with the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the NT. She also has experience in human rights monitoring and statutory oversight in the areas of mental health and disability. She is kept busy by her two adventurous and curious young children, and she enjoys getting lost in art or a good book. Lauren’s favourite cartoon is the Care Bears!

Ella has worked with children and young people for over 20 years as a lawyer, community worker, and advisor. She is an experienced driver of legal education, youth justice, mental health, suicide-prevention, arts and community focused programs and state-wide initiatives. Outside of work, you will find her running a community choir, caring for her two kids and dog, talking with neighbours, playing music, thinking about nature, or walking next to a river. Ella’s favourite cartoon is the Rugrats!

Sue believes all children and young people have a right to grow up feeling cared about and happy. Sue use her skills and qualifications in education, social policy and research to challenge inequality and discrimination and make positive differences to people’s lives. Outside of work, Sue enjoys bushwalking, music, movies, catching up with friends, reading, singing in a community choir, and walking her sweet greyhound, Ruby. Sue’s favourite childhood book was Wind in the Willows.

With a career spanning international community development and senior clinical roles in South Australia, Humaira brings a wealth of knowledge in supporting vulnerable communities and navigating complex statutory environments to uphold children’s best interests. When she is not advocating for best interests of children in care, you can find her coaching a junior basketball team or enjoying outdoors with her family. Humaira’s favourite food is pizza.

Merike has worked in non-government and the public sector, including foster care placement co-ordination, carer assessment and support, carer approval, project management and legislation implementation. Family and children are the light of Merike’s life and she lives the adage “it takes a village to raise a child”. She describes herself as ‘a people-person, who is bright and bubbly and always sees the glass as half full”. Merike’s favourite Cartoon is Bugs Bunny!

Within out-of-home-care, she has experience in the recruitment, assessment, approval and review of foster carers, as well as the support of foster care families. With over six years of experience, she brings a strong understanding of the systemic challenges facing First Nations peoples. Angel is completing a Master’s degree in Narrative Therapy. Outside of work, Angel is often on the go with personal hobbies and being a single mum to a five-year-old along with supporting Kinship care responsibilities. Angel’s favourite cartoon is Daria!
